A not insignificant detail is the quantity of illustrations. Each volume contains a large number around twenty of black and white plates — mostly portraits. More important are the maps and plans. These are seamlessly inserted into the text so that understanding maneuvers in both battles and campaigns was effortless. Having this great quantity of maps was a luxury that made my reading experience incalculably better. I cannot recommend Marlborough: His Life and Times highly enough, though I realize that it will only appeal to a very small audience.
But for those who have the time and interest to devote to these volumes do yourself a favor and read the unabridged editions if at all possible , I rest assured that you will be rewarded with a reading experience of the highest quality. I was a little apprehensive going into this last of the four books, considering that most of the best bits, Churchill's breathless descriptions of Marlborough's great successes at Blenheim, Ramillies and Oudenarde, were behind him and all that was left to recount was the inevitable decline of Britain, her Queen and her Captain-General.
There were still a few wonderful passages on Marlborough's machi An absolutely fantastic volume to conclude Churchill's epic biography of the Duke of Marlborough. There were still a few wonderful passages on Marlborough's machinations in Flanders - eeking out incremental victories and territorial gains - but I was captivated by the political skullduggery going on back on the home front. While there were times when I was having a little trouble keeping my Dukes in order Churchill just assumes you have a historical background knowledge that will help you keep your Somersets, Sunderlands and Bolingbrokes separate , for the most part I enjoyed riding shotgun as he exposed Harley's expansive plot to curry favour with Queen Anne and take over the effective and eventually, actual, reigns of government.
blacksmithsurgical.com/t3-assets/self/life-with-laura.php While reading this book, I saw "The Favourite", which documents a bit of the period, and added some extra pepper to the pot, but I also couldn't help but relate everything back to the current political situation, which has many similarities. A house incredibly divided, rival factions not entirely focused on the good of the nation, truckloads of self-interest from powerful individuals and a view that the nation would never recover from all the infighting, and that all it's hallowed institutions would collapse into meaninglessness.
Great book. For the whole Marlborough series, probably not Churchill's most accessible work, but certainly one of his best. Read it in the oldest possible edition you can find.

Somewhat melancholy and perhaps not without reflection of the author's own travails pre WW2 this final volume traces Marlborough's exploits from Malpaquet, Ne Plus Ultra and the fall from power in to his death in Kudos to divisive French diplomacy. This is by far is best. It is no wonder he was so adept at managing the war. He had studied European warring and attained the rank of Master. These are a must read if one is a Churchill fan.
